Help Alfie Get Back On His Feet Again.

Hello, we are Kirsty and Tim and we are Mummy and Daddy to two amazing boys; Alfie who is 10 and his younger brother Gabriel.

When Alfie was born he was very poorly and spent weeks in hospital. It was discovered he had a rare genetic condition called 9p deletion syndrome which caused lots of issues for Alfie including low muscle tone and craniosynostosis (the sutures in his skull fused too early meaning he had to have surgery to fix it and prevent pressure in his brain). He also has severe learning disabilities and severe speech delay. His low muscle tone meant it was very difficult for Alfie to meet usual milestones like sitting, rolling, standing and walking and he had to have a lot of help to be able to do these; he had to have physiotherapy from age 6 months.

There was no guarantee that Alfie would ever be able to walk but he did it! After so much hard work from Alfie, doing daily physio, using a stander and a walking frame, he started walking independently age 4!

Alfie still has low muscle tone but has worked hard to build up his stamina and muscles and around 18 months ago we were able to pack away his specialist buggy; he no longer needed it! He would sometimes need rests when walking but could sit on a bench before carrying on. Alfie now loves activities like swimming, going to the park, the beach, the woods and bowling!

And then on 12th September our lives got turned upside down; Alfie broke his left leg whilst at school.

Now, for any child, breaking their leg is an awful thing and takes a while to recover from. For Alfie this is disastrous; he will be in a full leg cast for 6 weeks altogether, not being able to move that leg and very limited exercise for his other leg. We are very worried about how long this will take Alfie to recover and get back to normal. He is going to need a lot of physiotherapy. During that time he is going to be back to using a wheelchair - something we had all worked so hard to get away from.

Alfie's learning disability means that he doesnt understand that he cant use his leg like normal; it must be very confusing for him after all these years of encouraging him to do his exercises and use his legs and walk to now being told he cant get up. He is having to be closely supervised 24/7 to make sure he doesnt get up or put any weight through his leg. We are all sleeping downstairs on the sofa to ensure he doesnt wake and try to get up in the night.

I am setting up this page to try to raise money to cover the costs of what Alfie will need whilst he is recovering as well as the bills whilst we are having to take time off work and some fun things for him to do whilst hes not able to do the things he loves. We are hoping to be able to get Alfie some extra private physiotherapy sessions to try to speed up Alfies recovery.

Alfies learning at school is going to be greatly impacted as he will not be able to do much of the the things he was working towards especially those geared towards gaining independence as he is completely reliant on us again. When Alfie is eventually back on his feet he will have to relearn a lot of things he has gained independence in such dressing and undressing and things he isnt able to practice whilst he is unable to walk.

We are devastated that this has happened after Alfie and us have worked so hard to get him to the point he was before his injury. We just want Alfie back on his feet again as quickly as possible and back to doing the things he loves. Thank you so much for reading and please donate if you can and/or share the page.
