My name is Alexis, and I’m reaching out after experiencing a devastating loss. On December 24th, a fire broke out at the storage facility where I kept a 10 x 10 unit filled with years of memories and hard work. I didn’t find out about the fire or the extent of the losses until December 26th—my birthday—when the storage company finally sent out a notice. The shock and heartbreak of learning everything was gone, especially during the holidays, has been overwhelming.
Inside that storage unit were not just valuables, but pieces of my life and my daughter’s life. About half of what we own. All my childhood thru college memorabilia, all my daughter’s baby/little kid stuff, and her art from preschool thru 3rd grade. Heirlooms and albums passed on from my grandmas on both sides. Some furniture, lots of books and clothes. And then all my investments, vintage designer bags (well over 100), my entire Poshmark closet, several framed artworks, jewelry, weird antique toys, old Barbies still in boxes… oh my god, so much.
Irreplaceable memories along with hundreds of items I’d spent nearly a decade collecting, which weren’t just collectibles and treasured trinkets; they were my safety net. I’d carefully researched and purchased them to resell on Poshmark and eBay, helping my family stay afloat as I worked through a period of underemployment.
The memorabilia from my childhood and my daughter’s childhood can never be replaced, nor can the unique collectibles I’ve lost. All of those items represented hope for a more secure future. Now, with everything gone, I’m left feeling exhausted and close to rock bottom. Any support that can be offered will be immensely appreciated. Your kindness would help me begin to rebuild and regain some stability for myself and my family. Thank you for reading and for any help you can give.
