In February of 2021, 12 year old Alexandra was diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) a rare and possibly devastating childhood brain tumor cancer.
DIPG is a type of brain tumor found in the stem of the brain making it inoperable. The cause is unknown and as of 2020 was incurable. Once the diagnosis of DIPG is suspected, there is a standard course of treatment that includes oral steroids, radiation therapy and then either compassionate care or clinical trials.
Alexandra enjoys school, her friends, animals, the ocean, and travel. In January she began having headaches and complaints of dizziness and blurred vision. An MRI in February revealed devastating news—DIPG. With one phone call revealing the MRI results, the lives of Alexandra’s family changed instantly.
Surgery was performed in Houston at Texas Children’s to place a shunt in her brain to relieve the pressure. A biopsy was also performed which confirmed the DIPG tumor and H3.3K27M mutation. She is currently undergoing radiation in Austin, Texas. Afterwards, she will begin a CAR-T immunotherapy phase 1 clinical trial study at Stanford in California. The CAR-T immunotherapy trials for kids with DIPG began in January 2021 and is, to date, showing good success with significant shrinkage of the participating kids’ tumors.
Much of the cost of the treatment has been covered by insurance; however, significant other costs have and will incur such as travel between California and Texas, hotels, out of pocket medical expenses, supplements, and concurrent alternative therapies.
