Hello, my name is Alex Mejia, and I am a sophomore at George Washington University majoring in Biology with a minor in Emergency Health Services (EHS). I am a first-generation college student, the first in my family to graduate high school and attend a four-year university.
I’ve worked incredibly hard to get here, and I’ve stayed committed to my studies and community involvement. Over the years, I’ve volunteered at the Boys & Girls Club, The Children's Clinic, the Youth Prevention Leadership Corps, Gifts for Seniors, and at my local church. At GWU, I’m active in professional and cultural student organizations, striving to give back and grow as a leader.
Last year, my financial aid package covered my tuition, housing, meals, and fees in full. Unfortunately, this year my aid was reduced significantly. One of my scholarships was removed, and instead, I was offered loans to make up the difference. Because of my family’s financial situation and the risks associated with debt under the current Trump administration (especially the effects of the "Big Beautiful Bill"), taking out loans is not feasible for us. My parents are hardworking blue-collar workers, but we simply cannot take on that burden right now.
This unexpected change has left me with a $16,153 gap for the 2025–2026 academic year. This amount covers:
Remaining tuition and fees not covered by aid
Textbooks and course materials
Meal Plan
Transportation costs
Basic living and miscellaneous expenses
Without this support, I face the very real possibility of having to leave GWU. Staying here matters deeply to me not just for my future, but as a way to honor my family, my community, and all the people who have believed in me.
I want nothing more than to continue my education, complete my degree, and build a future where I can contribute back to my community through science, health, and service.
Every donation, no matter the size, brings me one step closer to making this possible. If you cannot donate, please consider sharing this page to help me reach others who might be able to help.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for your kindness, support, and belief in me.
With gratitude,
Alexander Villanueva Mejia
