Hi Everyone! First off, I'd like to give a big thank you to everyone that donated to my previous GoFundMe that I made for my daughter. Unfortunately, we aren't able to access that account anymore, and it wasn't letting any donations go through, so we decided to make a new one. My name is Raquel, and I'm making this GoFundMe for my daughter, Alexa Mosquera. She's 20 years old, and I'd like to share her story with you.
Alexa was diagnosed with Lupus Nephritis when she was 16 years old. She was put on medication to treat the lupus, but over time, her kidney function was just getting worse and worse. At 18, she had gotten a kidney biopsy that then showed that her kidneys were very scarred, and her creatinine at this point was at 8. The doctors told us she had to be put on dialysis.
Alexa did hemodialysis for one year and about 4 months. Hemo was very hard; Alexa would go to a clinic 3 times a week for 4 and a half hours.
We then looked into doing PD dialysis, which is dialysis at home. It was definitely a big change, but it was worth it because Alexa didn't feel as sick as she did when she was on hemodialysis. She would have to connect to a machine every single night for 10 and a half hours. This definitely was longer than doing hemo, but she was able to be in the comfort of her own home.
As well as not feeling so sick after treatment, but they were still very draining. I admire my daughter so much because even though she was doing dialysis nightly, she would still get up every day, and no matter how tired and drained she was, it wouldn't stop her from doing her day-to-day things. Throughout everything she has gone through, she still puts a smile on her face and moves forward with such a positive mentality.
After being on dialysis for about 2 and a half years and praying that one day she will receive a kidney, we got the news that her brother Carlos wanted to be her donor. He went through all the testing, which took a few months of waiting and making sure he was a good match, and he indeed was the perfect match. The surgery date was then picked. March 4th was the day Carlos became her miracle, giving her a second chance at life by donating his kidney to his sister. Alexa's life changed that day; she is now able to look forward to her future. She would tell me all the time that she felt like her life was on hold because she didn't have the energy to go and do things that she wanted. As a mom, you can only imagine how hard it was to see your own daughter suffer and not be able to do anything. Dialysis drained her body so much because her body had to work so hard to just keep her alive every day. Carlos became her hero and saved her life. There's no amount of words that can describe how thankful I am for Carlos giving her this second chance.
The reason for this GoFundMe is to help my daughter with her financial needs. My daughter lives alone, and the recovery she needs to go through is going to keep her out of work for a while. Anything that you're able to donate will help so much throughout her recovery for any of her needs. Thank you so much for taking the time to read Alexa's story.
