Hi all, my name is Alexa Lux and I'm a singer/songwriter, song leader, and founder & director of https://www.cascadiafolkchoir.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Cascadia Folk Choir.
I've been a professional musician for a decade, and for most of that time I stood on stages performing for people. And while I loved the music, something always felt incomplete. I found myself searching for something deeper — something more meaningful. About 3 years ago, I found it in the song circle community.
After attending my first song circles and gatherings, I felt lit up by the growing movement of what I like to call emergent folk - music for the people, by the people; music that rises out of the intensity of these times like a wild herb with medicine for the indelible human spirit.
The emergent folk movement inspired me to start Cascadia Folk Choir, where I began to experience what happens when people make the shift from music consumer to music creator. Voices opened. Confidence grew. Strangers became connected. Something real — something electric — moved through the room.
I began to see that when we sing together, we rise together. Heal together. Build a better world together. But there was still a part of me that was unexpressed — the songwriter. The performer. I began to ask myself: how can I bridge participation & performance? How can I express myself creatively AND bring people into the process?
Together with my dear brother and musical collaborator Alex Milsted, Alexa & The Folk became the answer. A project devoted to the path of emergent folk and participatory music — where the line between artist and audience dissolves, and everyone becomes part of the shared song — in service to healing and the reclamation of music as a human birthright.
