Save the life of sailor Alex & help get him home

This fundraiser is for Alexander Carter organised by his brother Byron Carter.

All donations will be used to cover his medical bills and flights to Uk. They will be administered and used to cover these costs on his behalf by Byron Carter as he is incapacitated in ICU currently.

We are unfortunately in the position of needing to call on his family, friends, colleagues and sailors worldwide. Alex is from Cornwall, England, and at just 38 years young he has unexpectedly been admitted to an intensive-care unit in Guatemala on the first week of January 2024, with multiple blood clots on his brain. Alex is a sailor through and through – and he has finally achieved his lifelong dream of getting out there and sailing around the world.

He currently has 3 clots blocking 3 out of the 4 major veins in the brain. He is now in intensive care and receiving medication (anticoagulants) to increase the blood flow and slowly break up the clots. This is only really stabilising him, and what he really needs is a vascular approach which unfortunately is not available in Guatemala and requires returning to the UK. If we can get Alex back to the UK he can have the life saving surgery he urgently needs. Statistically 75% of patients suffering from blood clots in the brain make a full recovery after surgery - so there really is a good chance of survival if we can just get Alex home as soon as possible.

Currently, his hospital fees are over $66,000 USD (£55,000 GBP), and we are now looking at an emergency medical flight at over £130,000 GBP to try and get him home. Back home in the UK, Alex will hopefully be able to recieve the emergency life-saving treatment that he so desperately needs.

So please, if you are a friend, sailor, a cruiser, or this story simply just resonates with you in some way - then anything you donate right now will be so gratefully received, and could make the difference between life-and-death for Alex in these coming days. We can´t stress enough here that time is of the essence! If the hospital fees aren´t settled before he is discharged he may not be able to take his potentially life-saving medical flight back to the UK. So please, to every sailor, cruiser and salty vagabonde out there let’s show the world what our sailing community is truly made of, and let’s get Alex home…

A bit about Alex:

Alex is one of the loviest guys you´ll ever meet. He´s the kind of guy that´ll do anything for anyone. He´s a non-judgmental character that has only ever been a great friend, brother, and son to all those in his life. Alex is extremely close with his brother Byron (also an accomplished sailor), who is out there with Alex right now along with Alex´s girlfriend Lucy – as Alex fights for his life in ICU.

Alex has a great sense of humour, always cracking a joke and lightening the mood wherever possible. Put simply, the world needs more sailors like Alex.

It would be devastating if the world allowed such a great member of our global sailing community to slip away so easily – but I am confident that will not happen! I believe our sailing community across the globe will show the world what we are truly made of – and come together in Alex´s time of need, so he can live to sail another day.
