This past year has been the hardest of my life. I lost my family and my home, and I take responsibility for the choices that led me here. I wanted to make sure my ex and kids had a roof over their heads, even if it meant I would be the one without a place to stay. Since then, I’ve suffered two strokes, lost my car when the motor locked up, and my credit has taken a hit. The job I held for the last three years let me go without warning, and my application for unemployment has been delayed due to paperwork issues. I’ve done everything I can to get help, but so far, nothing has come through.

A couple of months ago, I had to put my mother in a home because of her dementia. She no longer remembers me, which has been heartbreaking. I’ve been sleeping in my car at her house, but the house itself isn’t livable right now—there’s black mold everywhere and who knows what else after months of being left open. I’m trying to get it fixed up so I can have a safe place to stay, but I’m struggling to afford even the basics like food and gas.

I’m embarrassed to ask for help, but I don’t see another way. I want to be able to see my kids play ball and support them during the holidays, and maybe even help my ex-wife out a little.
