Help Alex Medina recover

Donation protected
On August 12, 2019, Alex Medina’s partner, Wendy, received the phone call she had always been afraid of - Alex had been in a life-threatening accident.

As a truck driver, Alex faced the dangers of the road every day: reckless drivers, inclement weather, engine trouble, and the unpredictable circumstances that could pop up on any trip. On any given week, Alex was traveling from his home in Mystic, Connecticut to Stamford, Conn. where he began his work week. Each day, Alex filled his tractor trailer with waste from a Stamford landfill, drove 2.5 hours to Dunmore, Pennsylvania and disposed of the garbage at a larger waste facility, then traveled 2.5 hours back to Stamford for another truckload. Alex did this trip from Connecticut to Pennsylvania, and back, up to 3 times every day, traveling 800+ miles every day. Alex worked from Sunday evening through Saturday evening, sleeping in his truck cab, and essentially “living life on the road.” But it was not the road that has put Alex in his current situation.

In early August, while filling his trailer in Stamford for his first run of the day, Alex was knocked unconscious by a large log (10 inches in diameter) that fell from an upper ledge of the landfill. A bystander saw, called 911, and Alex was soon in the ICU at Stamford Hospital (story here: https://www.stamfordadvocate.com/policereports/article/Truck-driver-seriously-hurt-after-hit-by-falling-14297939.php ).

Completely immobile and struggling to breathe, Alex was placed on a ventilator and remained in intensive care. From the impact of the log, it is suspected that Alex’s neck was fractured and his spinal cord and central nervous system were both severely damaged. Doctors have not yet confirmed due to the massive amounts of swelling and bruising.

In the past couple of weeks, Alex has weaned off of his ventilator and has slowly been able to breathe on his own. He has undergone a tracheotomy to assist in his respiratory recovery and has used a feeding tube. He has been able to wiggle a couple of his toes but has had no luck moving his legs in a larger capacity, and has not been able to move neither his arms nor his hands. Doctors have informed his partner, Wendy, that although they believe Alex may be able to walk again one day, his arms may be permanently paralyzed.

With medical bills exponentially rising, and a long-term rehab stay in the near future, Alex’s family is struggling to afford basic living expenses, including their mortgage, putting their home in jeopardy. Wendy will likely provide full-time care for Alex, and he will be undergoing a recuperation and rehabilitation journey that will take at least 12 months, according to doctors. Their house will need to undergo construction to make it handicap accessible, and their everyday life will change forever.

As close friends of these wonderful folks, we are reaching out to everyone we know in search of support for Alex and Wendy. If you are able to help in any capacity, the effects of your donation will go much further than just a bill. They will provide relief, hope, and a sense of love and compassion that our friends are in dire need of. Thank you for reading, please share, and please keep Alex in your thoughts and prayers.

All our love,
Family and Friends of Alex and Wendy
