Hi everyone, I’m Susara, Alex’s step-mom. I’m creating this campaign because I watch my grandchildren, a 3-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl, wait for their dad to come home.
I watch my daughter-in-law, Michelle, live at the hospital, torn between being a wife, a mother, and the sole manager of a household that has suddenly lost its primary income.
And I watch my son, Alex, fight for his life.
How It Started
Just a few weeks ago, Alex was a vibrant 35-year-old father, husband, and award-winning Manager of the Year at Wow Mobile New Sudbury, Ontario.
Then, a simple strep infection escalated rapidly into septic shock. He underwent emergency surgery, developed kidney failure, and required respiratory support. He’s been in critical care ever since.
Where We Are Now
We’ve had breakthroughs. On his 35th birthday, Alex opened his eyes. He squeezed his dad’s hand, three times.
He squeezed Michelle’s hand. (He didn’t squeeze the nurse’s hand… even in the ICU, he knows who his people are.)
When I read him hundreds of birthday messages while he was sedated, he turned his head. He hears us. He’s still in there.
But the road is steep.
The Physical Toll:
Alex is still fighting infection. The pain during dressing changes is severe, often requiring re-sedation. His feet are critically compromised, blackened heels and toes, cold as ice. It looks like frostbite, but we can’t just warm his feet up to help. It stems from septic shock, we can only hope the medicine can restore circulation without further loss.
The Home Reality:
Alex lives in a 100-year-old railroad house in Capreol. It has tiny, steep stairs and narrow doors. When he comes home, he will need a mobility scooter.
The house, as it stands, is not accessible. It needs major renovations:
widened doors, a ramp, and a main-floor living setup.
The Housing Gap:
Because of the construction, Michelle and the kids cannot stay in the house during renovations. They’ll need temporary housing.
How The Funds Will Be Used
We are raising funds to bridge the gap between hospital discharge and a safe, sustainable recovery at home. Every dollar goes directly to the family.
1. Household Survival:
Mortgage payments, utilities, groceries, and transportation for Michelle during Alex’s hospitalization.
2. Medical & Recovery Costs:
Co-pays, prescriptions, and equipment not covered by insurance (including a mobility scooter).
3. Home Accessibility Renovations: Widening doors, installing ramps, and modifying the bathroom for safe access.
4. Temporary Housing: Rent or accommodation costs for Michelle and the children while the home is being renovated.
Why This Matters to Me
I’m not just raising funds for medical bills. I’m raising funds for my grandchildren’s stability. I’m raising funds so Michelle doesn’t have to choose between being at Alex’s bedside and keeping the lights on.
I’m raising funds so Alex can come home to a house that welcomes him, not one that barriers him.
We are grateful for the contractors and handymen who have already offered help. But the costs of materials, temporary housing, and daily living are overwhelming for a family already navigating tight finances.
How You Can Help
• Donate: Any amount helps. 100 helps with a utility bill; $500+ contributes to renovation materials.
• Share: Post this campaign on your feed. Tag friends in Northern Ontario. Visibility is currency.
• Pray & Send Love: Michelle reads every message. Alex hears us, even when he’s sedated.
Thank you for being the village that holds this family up. We believe Alex is coming home. We just need to make sure there’s a safe place for him to land.
With gratitude,
Susara
