In October 2025, Alex began having seizures—three major episodes in one month. After a 3-day stay at Renown Children’s Hospital with no answers, we were referred to Primary Children's Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).
FND affects how the brain communicates with the body, causing sudden and unpredictable episodes. At times, Alex’s limbs become paralyzed or begin seizing for up to 45 minutes. There are also moments when he completely loses the ability to speak or think clearly. He has even forgotten how to swallow while eating. Alex is working with a team of specialists as we learn how to manage this condition.
At a time when most teenagers are gaining independence, Alex has had to step back from sports, struggles with school at times, and must be closely monitored for his safety. Despite everything, his attitude has been incredible. He recently said, “I don’t know why God is letting me go through this, but I know He’s going to use it to help someone else.”
His care team has recommended a service dog to detect episodes before they happen, alert others when he needs help, and help prevent injury during an episode. A service dog would give Alex greater safety, independence, and confidence as he navigates this journey.
The funds raised will cover the deposit due by the end of July, the cost of the service dog, 12–24 months of specialized training to meet ADA requirements, and travel and lodging in Illinois for 4 days at the end of the training for bonding and graduation. Your support will help Alex gain the safety, confidence, and independence he needs to thrive with FND.
We trust God through this journey, and we are deeply thankful for any prayers or support you feel led to give. Your generosity helps bring Alex closer to the safety and independence a service dog would provide.
