Alex is only two years old. He has a rare and devastating disease that is destroying his health and his childhood. He was born with APLAID, a serious auto-inflammatory condition that causes his immune system to attack his own body. He has painful inflammation that affects his skin, eyes, sinuses, gums, and intestines, and leaves him more vulnerable to infections.
Despite every therapy available to support his immune system, nothing can stop the inflammation that is already damaging his organs. He receives monthly antibody transfusions because his body cannot produce the antibodies needed to fight infections, and he has tried multiple medications to calm the inflammation, but none have been effective. APLAID has taken away much of the comfort, play, and freedom a toddler should have – but there is hope.
Alex’s best and only chance at a healthy life is a bone marrow transplant at SickKids Hospital in Toronto. This life-changing procedure could rebuild his immune system, reduce the relentless inflammation, and give him the childhood he deserves.
Alex’s Story
Alex was diagnosed with APLAID at just six months old, and the disease has affected nearly every part of his young life. The inflammation caused by this condition has led to:
- Blistering skin lesions
- Eye inflammation
- Bowel inflammation
- Gum inflammation affecting his teeth
- Chronic rhino-sinusitis/mucosal inflammation
- Damage to multiple organs
Even with monthly therapies to support his immune system, his body cannot regulate or protect itself the way it should.
As the disease progresses, the inflammation continues to harm Alex’s body and limit his quality of life. Watching him endure symptoms and treatments that would overwhelm an adult is unimaginably difficult for him and his family.
After extensive consultations, specialists determined that a bone marrow transplant is the only treatment that offers Alex a genuine chance at a longer, healthier, and more comfortable life. The skilled Bone Marrow Transplant team at SickKids is ready to give him this opportunity, and Alex’s family is deeply grateful for the chance to change his future.
But the procedure and recovery will be incredibly demanding. Alex will need to remain in a closely controlled environment for 12 months while his new immune system develops. During this time, his parents will need to devote themselves fully to his care, taking significant time away from work to keep him safe, supported, and surrounded with love.
How You Can Help
This fundraiser will support Alex and his family during the long months of treatment and recovery ahead. Donations will help cover:
- Basic living expenses while both parents take extended leave from work to care for Alex
- Transportation and day-to-day costs throughout his transplant and hospital visits
- Creating a stable, safe healing environment during his fragile recovery period
Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a meaningful difference. Your generosity will help ease the financial strain so Alex’s family can focus entirely on what matters most: giving him the best chance at healing.
Please help Alex fight for the healthy life he deserves
Alex is a bright, loving, resilient little boy who deserves the chance to grow, play, and live free from the pain this disease has caused.
By donating or sharing his story, you’re helping give him that chance and offering strength and hope to a family fighting alongside him every step of the way.
If donations exceed what is needed for Alex’s care and recovery, the remaining funds will be paid forward through a donation to Ronald McDonald House, so other families can feel the same support and compassion.
Thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, for supporting Alex’s journey.
