Alejandro and his wife Stefany are my dear friends. On Friday, I accompanied Alejandro to what should have been a routine appointment. Alejandro is here legally, with all his paperwork in order. He works three, sometimes four jobs, just to support his family. He’s a homeowner, a hard worker, and someone who has always done everything right. But that day, everything changed.

I watched as officials told Alejandro that everything checked out and he was good to leave, that he just needed to wait for final paperwork. But then, they called him back and detained him. I saw firsthand how he was treated so horribly, and now he’s locked up in Aurora. It was heartbreaking to witness not just Alejandro’s pain, but also to see other innocent families, including little children, being taken away. This is not the American way, and it’s not the America we should live in.

Alejandro is the kind of person who would help anyone in need—he would take the shirt off his back for a friend or stranger. Now, he and Stefany need our help. They face mounting legal fees and the challenge of covering living expenses while he is detained.
