Help Alejandra's Family with Medical Costs

Hi, my name is Alejandra. I am raising funds to help my parents with their medical expenses.

On Sept 8th, my dad was admitted into the hospital in Mexico, where he was at the time, with what they thought was a gastrointestinal obstruction. Three days later, they told us he was having a very hard time breathing and that he needed to be intubated; if not, he was gonna die. They did a spinal tap showing he had bacterial meningitis and started him on antibiotics.

We decided to transfer him to UMC in El Paso, TX. My dad is a NM resident, but because of his condition, El Paso was the closest. Once admitted, UMC needed to know what condition he was in, so they were gonna stop all sedation. He has not responded since. They started him on viral and bacterial antibiotics, still doing testing, and they couldn’t figure out why he got so sick so soon. They tested him for the West Nile Virus, which was positive. They gave him some plasma and still on antibiotics.

He is still not able to breathe on his own. We are hoping once the inflammation in his brain subsides, he will be able to do that. On Oct 8, they did a tracheotomy and a feeding tube. He will need to be moved to a long-term acute hospital. We want to move him to Albuquerque, NM, where we are, but we have to cover the ambulance transfer ourselves. He also only has Medicare, so we still need to pay 20% of all charges incurred already. He has been in ICU for three weeks now.
