My brother Bahman and his girlfriend, Alejandra, are facing an unimaginable challenge that has turned their lives upside down. Alejandra was recently hospitalized and diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder that left her temporarily paralyzed and unable to walk, feed herself, or work. Despite her incredible strength and determination, the road to recovery is long, and the medical bills are staggering.

Their Story:

Just a few weeks ago, Alejandra was rushed to the ER after bouts of fainting and tingling and weakness in her extremities, only to learn through a spinal tap that she was battling GBS. This debilitating condition progressed rapidly, leaving her paralyzed and reliant on intensive hospital care. Alejandra spent two weeks in the hospital, then another two and a half weeks in intensive therapy. Her spirit remains unbroken, and she’s made incredible progress, now able to take a few steps with a walker and move her jaw. However, she still faces months—possibly a year—of therapy and recovery ahead.

During this time, Alejandra has been unable to work, and all financial responsibilities have fallen on Bahman. Not only does he work tirelessly to keep up with their mounting bills, but he’s also transitioning into a new position within his company, learning and juggling a lot, as he’s also Alejandra’s full-time caregiver, supporting her every step of the way. The financial strain has become overwhelming, and the last update on their medical bills showed a staggering $46,000—and counting.
