My name is Albert, I am a Legal Permanent Resident (L.P.R.) and I’ve called the United States home since 2005, when I married my wife Michele and received my green card. In 2008, a voting mistake—caused by confusion at the polls and the effects of a traumatic brain injury—set off a chain of events that changed my life. I was told by a voting assistant that I could vote, and, trusting their guidance, I did. Later, I learned this was a mistake, and when I applied for citizenship, I was denied and investigated. The sheriff and doctors determined I had no intent to do harm, and I was told to try again in 10 years.

In 2025, after 16 years of working, serving my community, and building a family, I applied again for citizenship. I was denied once more, and just before Christmas, I received a letter saying I must appear before a federal immigration judge and face possible deportation. I love this country deeply and have always tried to give back. Now, I am at risk of being separated from my wife, friends, and 15 grandchildren who are the center of my life.
