On Friday, July 17th, an unexpected fire devastated the Helix Apartments complex in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, leaving over 90 units uninhabitable and displacing dozens of residents and their pets. Among those affected was my 26-year-old sister Alaina, who lost her apartment and nearly lost her cat Macaroni.

Alaina was away on a camping trip when she received the unimaginable news that her apartment building was on fire. Unable to access her apartment by the time she made it home, she spent Friday night in agony waiting for any update on Macaroni, who was still trapped inside the building.

After an incredibly long and emotional 25-hour wait, Macaroni was finally rescued and evaluated by a veterinarian on Saturday night, July 18th. We are beyond grateful to share that he’s safely recovering with Alaina again!!

While we’re overwhelmed with gratitude that both Alaina and Macaroni made it through this tragedy safely, they’re now faced with the difficult reality of starting over from scratch. The apartment building has been deemed uninhabitable and inaccessible, leaving her without housing, all of her belongings, and a clear path forward as she begins to rebuild her life in the Twin Cities, where she’s lived for just under a year so far.

Anyone who knows Alaina knows that she is kind, selfless, and always willing to show up for the people she loves. She spends her days caring deeply for her friends, family, and strangers alike — and now she finds herself in a position where she needs that same support from her community.

We’re trying to raise funds to help alleviate the financial burden that comes with losing nearly everything in an instant...no one ever expects to lose their home overnight or should have to face that adversity on their own.

While there are still many unknowns about what comes next, one thing we do know is that Alaina and Macaroni are together and safe. For that alone, we are incredibly thankful.
