Alaa's mother is battling cancer in the midst of the horrific genocide waged upon them and their people. Alaa and his family have been displaced in Al-Mawasi for over a year now. We are trying to help provide lifesaving cancer treatment to his mother, Aida, and ultimately get them back to Shuja’iyya, the suburb of the city of Gaza where they lived prior to the genocide. With limited funds, damaged roads and limited supplies of food and fuel, we need your help to aid their survival.

My name is Daniel, and I’m the organizer of this campaign. I’m originally from occupied Palestine, and I grew up near Alaa and his family, albeit on the other side of the apartheid border. For the past year, the Sukker (pronounced sooh-ker; meaning ‘sugar’ in Arabic) family have gone through the unimaginable: displacement, several near death experiences, death and injury of their relatives and loved ones, hunger, and illness.

My friend Alaa and his family survived the genocide, in large part thanks to the kindness of strangers who helped secure their safety. Now, they are about to embark on a journey to return to their beloved, albeit destroyed, neighborhood of Shuja’iyya in northern Gaza.

Having been displaced in Al-Mawasi for over a year now, the cost of transportation to northern Gaza is astronomical: it will cost $4000 to have Alaa and his family— including his mother who is recuperating from cancer— transported back to their native, beloved land.

Why is it so expensive?
While the journey to their destination is ‘only’ 18 miles (about 30 km), means of transportation, roads, and gasoline remain highly limited in Gaza, after over a year of genocide, intentional ruin, and forced displacement. Infrastructure is Gaza was purposefully destroyed to discourage Palestinians from returning. In addition to themselves, the Sukker family have the belongings they were able to hold on to with them, which add to the overall cost of transportation.

Why move back when northern Gaza is in ruins?
‘Optimistic’ assessments of the damage in Gaza predict that it would take anywhere between 3 and 5 years to remove the debris and rubble left behind by Isr--l’s annihilation campaign. If left abandoned and uninhabited, Palestinians risk permanent displacement due to the unpredictable nature of their oppressors, as well as the volatile state of affairs and the volatility of the ceasefire agreement. In addition, the people of Gaza who have been sheltering in Al Mawasi are densely squeezed into the former so-called “safe zone”.

With your help, we can help the Sukker family return to their home and restore their lives after enduring over a year of genocide.
