Help Al Newman overcome Leukemia

Donation protected
On February 8th, 2018, after a routine blood test for a cold, Al received the heartbreaking unexpected diagnosis of Acute Myelomonocytic Leukemia (AMML). By the next day, his condition had worsened so rapidly that he was immediately transferred over 100 miles away from home to MUSC Charleston, where treatment began as soon as he arrived.

The aggressive treatment for this type of cancer will completely wipe out his immune system before his body will have a chance to heal. The entire course of initial chemotherapy will take between 3 - 6 months, spent entirely at the hospital in Charleston

After the first course of treatment, it will be many months afterwards before his strength returns to him and his immune system recovers, and even longer after that before he'll be able to return to his job as administrator at an assisted living facility.

Between Al being isolated in the hospital, and his wife staying with him in Charleston, their household income will be drastically reduced, while their daily expenses will only increase.  Lucia will be unable to leave Al for extended periods of time because the method for treating AMML pushes the body to near the point of death for the duration of the treatment. Funds from this GoFundMe campaign will be used to help support the trips for the immediate family to and from the hospital and to help cover expenses related to the entire situation.
