Help Akira With HS Tuition

Donation protected

I know we are all struggling during this bizarre and difficult time, but I need all the help I can get and figured it couldn’t hurt to ask. My name is Sherryl Mortis and I have a 13-year-old daughter from Los Angeles who was recently accepted into a private school. She has excelled her entire life and I am not just speaking these words because I am her mother, but because I truly believe that she is a standout student who will go on to do great things.

Her name is Akira and she attends a charter school in Inglewood, California. She has been an artistic person her entire life. She loves to dance, paint, and participate in sports! She is a huge foodie, a bookworm and has shared with me her dream of becoming a brain surgeon.

She was a member of Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles for three years and was noted as one of the top entrepreneurs in her troop. Today, I am asking for any financial assistance that you can offer, refer, or direct to her so that she is able to attend high school in Hollywood, California. She's an honor student who has always maintained a very high G.P.A.

Our family has worked as a team to fund her upcoming journey, but every single one of us has either lost our job or has had their hours cut dramatically due to Covid-19. It’s a blessing we still have a roof over our heads. At this time, we are at the end of our rope and the school year is creeping up on us. We have basically exhausted all of our financial “back-ups” and we just need some assistance.

She has been saving her coins from the time she’s been able to identify how much they were each worth. She is in the process of applying for scholarships that are catered to girls just like her. There was little financial assistance offered, but not enough to cover her tuition. Being an African American girl raised by a single parent, it seems she has fallen through every crack that exists, but we will continue to persevere.

We would hate for Akira to miss out on a wonderful opportunity to attend one of the top all-girl high schools in the country due to finances and other circumstances.

Because of the impact Covid-19 has had, I have lost my job. Working as a waitress in the restaurant business, I never thought this pandemic would affect me and my family the way it has. But not being able to afford my daughters’ schooling anymore has devastated me tremendously. The uncertainty of when I shall return to work is unknown. Akira, who has to give up scheduled school trips, junior prom and even walking the stage, has been an unbelievable and unselfish help.

Whatever aid you are able to donate to her cause would be a great blessing. We all have those moments where we’re at the end of the road of something and need assistance. Believe me, this is the last thing I would want to do, but if you don’t ask, you will not receive. Akira and I both appreciate any consideration that you can give at this time. Even sharing this campaign would be a big help and we would be extremely grateful.

Thank you.
