Help Akira Recover: A Friend in Crisis

I'm reaching out on behalf of my dear friend Akira, someone I've known for 30 years since we were teenagers in high school together. Last month, my son and I traveled to Japan to visit him, and true to his generous spirit, Akira gave us one of the most special experiences of our lives—even while quietly battling his own struggles.

Akira is one of those rare souls—a deep thinker, kind, gracious, gentle, adventurous, and genuinely funny. He spent his career as a professional photographer and motorcycle racer, living life with passion and creativity. His home is filled with the reptiles he adores—snakes, turtles, and his iguana—creatures he cares for with the same devotion he shows to the people in his life. Akira loves his friends fiercely, always showing up for those who matter to him.

Four years ago, everything changed. Akira suffered a heart attack and was diagnosed with stage 3 heart failure. Unable to continue his photography work, he refused to give up. With characteristic determination, he started driving for Uber using his beloved motorcycle to support himself.

Last month, tragedy struck again. Akira was in a devastating motorcycle accident that broke his ribs, punctured his lung, and severely strained his back. He can barely walk. His motorcycle—his only source of income—was totaled.

Now Akira faces an impossible situation. In Japan, government assistance for heart failure patients only becomes available at stage 4. He has no family financial support. The cultural stigma around not working in Japan is adding immense weight to his mental health struggles, compounding the physical pain he's already enduring.
