Help Akira Overcome Her Biggest Challenge

Dear friends, family, and kind souls,

Good day, friends and compassionate strangers. Our hearts are reaching out to you as we share a chapter from the story of our girl Akira, the 2-year-old long haired German Shepherd with a soul as pure as sunlight. From the moment we met her, we knew she was destined to be an irreplaceable part of our family. She wasn’t just our first dog; she became our second daughter in every sense.

Unfortunately, life has a unique way of reminding us of its unpredictable nature. A month ago, Akira's sudden cries of pain prompting an urgent trip to the Barrie Emergency Clinic. Tests and imaging revealed concerns with her lower back. We thought we had covered every possible eventuality with pet insurance. Still, life had another plan.

Our pursuit of answers led us to a surgeon in Toronto. Yet, within a few minutes, our journey diverted to the neurology department. After a series of tests, including a CT scan and ultrasound, we confronted the unimaginable. The scans revealed a mass within Akira's spinal canal at the lumbosacral (LS) joint. This mass is causing compression of the spinal cord (cauda equina), which seems to be the source of her pain.

The neurologist believes that the mass is likely malignant. The primary suspicions surround it being a peripheral nerve sheath tumor, lymphoma/lymphosarcoma, meningioma, or chondroma. Although less likely, a nephroblastoma has not been ruled out entirely.

With heavy hearts and hope in our eyes, we've scheduled a dorsal laminectomy for Akira on November 1st. This procedure will remove a portion of the spinal vertebra bone to attempt to extract the mass.

The financial burden has weighed heavily on us. Even after insurance, we've already had to pay around $1,800 from our pockets in the last month. The upcoming surgery's estimated cost is anywhere between $7,630 to $10,469, and that doesn't factor in the potential chemotherapy if the mass is diagnosed as cancerous.

It's with a heavy heart and a swallowed pride that we reach out to you today. We are humbled to ask for your support, be it financial, emotional, or simply in sharing Akira's story. Every little bit helps, and every prayer counts.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for taking the time to read Akira’s story and for any assistance you can provide. We promise to keep everyone updated on her journey.
