Aki is our 7-year-old border collie, and he has brought so much joy into our lives since we adopted him from a foster when he was just a year old. He’s become the Office Mascot at mom’s job, loves the beach, truck rides, trips to the mountains, snuggles, and his most favorite thing of all: his precious frisbee. Aki is a ray of sunshine to everyone he meets, always ready to share hugs and smooches with friends and strangers alike.
On the evening of May 21st, Aki was playing in the backyard when he suddenly couldn’t move his back legs. We rushed him to the emergency vet, where they determined he had a stroke-like injury to his spine and referred us to the Charlotte CARE animal hospital. After an overnight stay and an MRI, he was diagnosed with an ANNPE injury (acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion). The neurologist gave him a 75% chance to walk normally again, but he faces a 4 to 12 week recovery period. Since then, Aki has needed help with walks, urination, and bowel movements, and has been hospitalized multiple times for dehydration, nausea, diarrhea, and a UTI. Through it all, he’s stayed positive and kept his loving spirit.
We are raising funds to cover Aki’s hospital bills, special equipment like a wheelchair, ongoing therapy such as laser and water treadmills, and all the essentials for his care at home including pee pads, diapers, harnesses, baby wipes, and medications. We are doing everything we can to ensure our boy can recover and hopefully play frisbee again. Please help us on our journey through his recovery. Anything makes a difference, and your support means the world to us and to Aki.
