My name is AJ and I am a single mother to a little girl named Leilani who has high needs autism.
My daughter and I are facing housing instability, and I never thought I would be in a position where I had to ask for help like this. I am being forced to leave our home by August 31 because my landlord wants the property vacant in order to sell it. I agreed not to fight the process in court for an official eviction because having an eviction on my record would make it even harder for me to rent another apartment in the future. I am trying to do everything the right way to protect my daughter and our future housing opportunities. Since receiving notice, I have applied to every housing authority and affordable housing program I qualify for. I am currently waitlisted for Section 8, but there are no vouchers available and the waitlist is now closed. I do not receive housing assistance, and despite doing everything I can, I still have nowhere for us to go. My biggest fear is being forced into a homeless shelter far away from the only stability my daughter knows. I do not want to uproot her from her school, her educational program, her friends, and the life she has built here. The thought of transferring her nearly 50 miles away and forcing her to start over is devastating. Like so many families right now, I simply do not have the savings needed to secure a new apartment. Between first month’s rent, last month’s rent, security deposits, moving costs, storage, and emergency expenses, the amount needed is overwhelming. I created this GoFundMe to try to keep a roof over our heads and give my daughter some sense of stability during one of the hardest moments of our lives. The goal of $15,000 would help cover:
• Security deposits and move-in costs
• First and last month’s rent
• Emergency housing expenses
• Moving and storage costs
