My son Aiven is a bright, outgoing 13-year-old who loves school, football, and track and field. Recently, while riding his bike home from school, a car backed out of a driveway and hit him just a block from home. Thankfully, Aiven’s injuries are minor—he has a laceration to his ear, a separated ligament in his shoulder, bruised ribs, and some scrapes and bruises—but we are so grateful he is safe.

Unfortunately, the accident destroyed both his new glasses (which he’d only had for two weeks) and his new bike (just four days old). We haven’t been able to find his glasses, and the warranty won’t cover repair or replacement for either item. Right now, we don’t have the funds to replace them, and Aiven really needs his glasses to see and his bike for transportation, especially when I’m at work. He’s a dedicated student and participates in extracurriculars, so having a bike and glasses is essential for his independence and daily life.

Aiven has faced challenges before—when he was five, he was hit by a young driver with a learner’s permit. Now, at 13, he’s been through another accident, but he remains resilient and positive.
