My cousin, Charis, has been faced with difficult circumstances beyond her control. As a baby, she had to leave Canada and go to the Philippines after her mom was deported. She grew up in the Philippines, but as a Canadian citizen, she eventually had to leave and was deported back to Canada—without her mom.

Now she’s caught in a complicated immigration process that prevents her from attending school, as I, her caretaker in Canada, am not recognized as her legal guardian. Despite having an affidavit of consent from her parents, her Canadian school cannot accept it because it isn’t recognized by a Canadian court. This has left her unable to continue her education and at risk of being sent back to the Philippines in just one month, forcing her into yet another cycle of separation and uncertainty, only to return to Canada again—a heartbreaking and costly cycle.

We have just one month to raise the funds needed for her legal fees to fight for her right to stay in Canada. Becoming her legal guardian will give her the chance to stay, continue her education, and create a future where she can thrive—and one day help support her family back in the Philippines.

Our lawyer has advised us that in order to resolve this and keep Charis in Canada, we need $5,000 to secure a guardianship order. We’ve already obtained $1,000 leaving us only $4,000 away from our goal. We believe with our family, friends' and community's help, we can achieve this goal and save Charis from more heartache.
