Hello! My name is Amanda, and I am campaigning on behalf of my son, Aiden. Aiden has epilepsy and is in desperate need of a seizure alert service dog. When he has a seizure, he does not convulse or make noise, which makes detection very difficult. Typically, he loses consciousness during a seizure. However, there are times when the seizures come on so quickly that he does not lose consciousness, and we only realize it when we see him disoriented in a postictal state. Sleeping has become a thing of the past because I have woken up to him actively seizing, not knowing for how long. Seizure alert dogs can sense seizures before they happen and are trained to assist and get help. The alert from a dog could allow us to sleep soundly without the fear of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy). Aiden has missed months of school, countless events, and even his birthday, which has taken an emotional toll on him. A service dog could significantly improve his life in terms of safety, quality, and companionship. The costs of these dogs and their training are astronomical, upwards of $30,000 in some cases, which is money we simply do not have. We were blessed with the opportunity to have a suitable puppy placed with us. However, the cost of getting the puppy trained in the appropriate timeframe (10-12 month training program) along with travel and miscellaneous expenses for the dog is around $24,000. I know this is an exorbitant amount of money, but any contribution would be life-changing for my family. Thank you for taking the time to read and share our story.
