Support Ahmir’s Battle Against Rare Brain and Spine Cancer

My name is Tanisha. On December 16, I took my 8-year-old son, Ahmir, to St. Joseph’s Children’s Emergency Room due to him experiencing soreness in his back, heaviness, and numbness in both of his legs, causing him to fall or trip over his feet. He was soon initially admitted into their Children’s Hospital after receiving X-rays due to severe chronic constipation and encopresis, assuming this was causing the issue with back pain and walking. On December 19, he had an MRI to confirm he was no longer impacted since his issues walking did not get any better. The following day, his neurologist advised an abnormality in his lower spine, thoracic region. A second MRI was performed the next day, and his results left me numb and completely terrified. My son was then diagnosed with an intramedullary spinal cord tumor, most likely benign.

He has undergone one surgery so far at St. Joseph’s Children's Hospital to remove the growth. Unfortunately, 5% of the tumor is deeply embedded in his spinal cord, making complete removal impossible at this time, but a sample was sent off to verify the type of tumor he has. The treatment plan is still being determined as this is a rare tumor. This diagnosis was so unexpected and is devastating for Ahmir, his family, friends, and all those who know and love him, especially during the holiday season. Prior to this, Ahmir didn’t have any medical conditions, just a very active, loving, and compassionate little boy. Ahmir has an extremely strong spirit; his smile and personality light up the room, and he is facing this ordeal with strength and positivity. He reminds me, “Mommy, don’t worry, I am strong!”

Thankfully, Ahmir does have some insurance, but it will not cover all of the expenses that will encumber our family during this difficult battle. His dad and I will need to miss work to care for Ahmir, and it will soon take a toll on us financially.
