With the recent withdrawal of all remaining US and foreign troops from Afghanistan, many people who worked with foreigners and contributed to building democracy there are now in grave danger and in URGENT need of our help. The situation is dire.
The judges and prosecutors who had jailed criminals, including Taliban members, are now in extreme danger. Prisoners have been released and are now hunting down the judges and prosecutors who convicted them. They are surveilling their houses, forcing these people into hiding, and wherever possible attacking them. They have burnt down their homes, tortured and beaten them and their family members, raped and killed them. The violence is increasing day-by-day making their evacuation as vital as ever for their survival. Their bank accounts have been frozen and the Taliban now possess US technology for biometric recognition. The families remain in hiding unable to go outside and have no access to money.
Without salaries, or access to their bank accounts, coupled with a drought, children have already starved to death and parents are malnutritioned, including many breastfeeding mothers. Families are selling children, usually young girls, for money to survive. This is a humanitarian disaster, and as winter sets in it will continue to worsen. UNDP estimates 97% of those in Afghanistan will be below the poverty line by 2022 (source: https://www.undp.org/press-releases/97-percent-afghans-could-plunge-poverty-mid-2022-says-undp). The loss of these lives is preventable.
The cost to house a family in a safe house in Afghanistan is $300 per month, and a month’s supply of food is $100-200 per month.
Imogen Canavan and a small team of humanitarian aides are working to support judges, prosecutors, and some other high risk persons and their families to survive. There are many waiting for evacuation over the coming months.
This GoFund me will directly fund accommodation for the most at risk families and basic food for many more until they can be evacuated to safety.
