Shortly after the takeover of Afghanistan in 2021, the Taliban banned women and girls from continuing their education beyond the 6th grade.
The staff of Voice of America Learning English has filled the void, in collaboration with the University of Cambridge, by covertly providing education for Afghan women and girls.
Unfortunately, the dismantling of Voice of America in 2025 has put this program in jeopardy. We were able to continue the program for the past few months with private donations. But we need your help now!
We are looking to raise $10,000 to continue the program this coming year. The money will be used to pay small stipends to U.S.-based English teachers to teach online classes for Afghan women and girls whose education has been disrupted. Dr. Jill Robbins, who oversaw this project for VOA Learning English, has designed the advanced English curriculum for Afghan women. Jill will oversee the program and recruit teachers to conduct the classes. At the same time, student-volunteers from the University of Cambridge will act as mentors to the Afghan students.
Just listen to what Khalida, a 22-year-old student, said of the program: "So, to the Voice of America, Cambridge University, and Rahela Trust. Your compassion and commitment to supporting Afghan women will forever be remembered. But you have not just educated us. You have changed our lives. And through us, you're shaping the future of Afghanistan. I hope that your support continues for Afghan women, as there are countless, countless others who need your guidance, encouragement, and belief in their potential."
Please give what you can.
