Said Hashimi and his family have faced unimaginable challenges since being airlifted out of Kabul in 2021. Said, a former interpreter at the U.S. Embassy, and his wife worked hard to rebuild their lives in the United States, first in Philadelphia and then in Stafford, VA, where Said was employed by the State Department until last September. With five young children, they have always done their best to provide stability and hope despite adversity.
I met Said and his family four years ago when a friend who is a HIAS Philadelphia volunteer introduced us because they needed furniture and we had some to give them. Since then, I have tried to help them navigate legal and immigration issues and we have become friends. Their five children are delightful and we enjoy their visits.
On Wednesday afternoon, June 3, 2026, a fire broke out in their neighborhood and completely destroyed their home and everything they owned. While the family is incredibly grateful to have made it out safely and without injury, they are now faced with the overwhelming task of rebuilding their lives from the ground up. As a one-income family, and after Said was laid off last year, their financial situation became especially challenging. Their five children, ranging in age from 18 months to 11 years old, have lost their belongings, treasured memories, and the sense of security that comes with having a home.
As they begin this difficult journey of starting over, Said and his family are in need of clothing, shoes, toiletries, and essential items for each member. Monetary donations are deeply appreciated and will help cover immediate needs and rebuilding expenses. They are doing their best to stay positive and provide as much stability and normalcy as possible for their children during this heartbreaking time. Any support—whether through a donation, sharing their story, or keeping the family in your thoughts—means more than words can express. Every contribution, no matter the size, will help them take another step toward getting back on their feet. Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support during this incredibly difficult time.
All donations will go directly to the family and will be used for immediate expenses and to replace the clothing, personal items and household effects that they have lost.
