Help Adrick Build a Business
Donation protected
When I worked at UW, I helped conduct a pilot study in Kampala, Uganda. There I met and befriended a very good man, Charles Tumwesigye, who worked as my driver. I also got to meet his family - his eldest son, Adrick, and I have remained friends.
Adrick did very well in school, and was accepted to university, where he also excelled. After he graduated, he was one of the few lucky young people able to gain employment - there are about 8,000 jobs per 40,000 university degrees in Uganda. They have one of the highest rates of youth unemployment in Africa.
While he was working, Adrick constructed his parents a house, and helped his brother and sisters go to university, He continues to take incredible care of his family and his father, who was diagnosed with diabetes, but things have changed.
Adrick's job ended as the NGO he was working for wound up, and looking for employment became his work, but there's just been no steady work available in Uganda for *years*. In a country where tribalism, nepotism, racism and corruption are at the highest levels, most Ugandans cannot find employment, even when they're as ingenuitive and hardworking as the Tumwesigyes.
In his continued and determined effort to support his family, Adrick has started a business, delivering fruits around Kampala. He has seen modest success, but needs to scale to make the business able to support the family. In order to grow and expand his territory, he needs a vehicle. This is where we come in!
100% of your donation will go to help this hardworking man and his beautiful family - he'd like to buy a Toyota van, to allow room for as many deliveries as possible. The funds will be collected by me, and put into a specific account, then transferred directly to Adrick via WorldRemit. I will cover the transfer fees, and will provide accounting records to anyone who has questions or concerns.
Let's use our privilege to lessen the lasting impact of colonialism, even if it’s just one family at a time.
Thank you for your help!
