My name is Emily and I am a 3rd year veterinary student at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. One of my closest friends and genuinely one of the kindest and selfless people I feel so lucky to have met along this journey is Adriana Carucci. Adriana is also a 3rd year veterinary student at UFCVM, is also known as the queen of dachshunds, and is a dog mom to two wonderful weiner dogs. Unfortunately, one of her dachshunds has developed IVDD but not for the first time, but the second offense within the last year. His legal name is Whiskey but everyone who knows him well, knows he also goes by Jim. Jim is such a special boy as he is Adriana’s first born son. He developed a surgical case of IVDD towards the end of 2024 and required emergency back surgery at that time. He had a wonderful recovery and has been doing well ever since. Unfortunately, a few days ago he began showing signs again of back pain, discomfort and difficulties using his back paws. Adriana immediately brought him into the neurology department at UF where initially the vet recommended medical management. Just a few days into attempting to medically manage him this time, he lost feeling in his back paws. Adriana immediately brought him back into the neurology department and he had an MRI the same day where they discovered he had yet another herniated disc. He is heading into emergency surgery now to correct this to stop the pinching of his spinal cord in hopes to provide him a pain free and normal life once again. As vet students, we have limited funds when it comes to medical emergencies and I wanted to share her story in hopes to help ease the financial burden of trying to provide her dog-son a normal life once again.
