If you know Adina Walling, you know she is the kind of healthcare professional who never hesitates to help others. With 7 years of EMS experience in Las Vegas working for American Medical Response (AMR), clinical roles with Dispatch Health in urgent and primary care, and most recently working Per Diem at Spring Valley Hospital, Adina has dedicated her career to caring for people on their worst days.

This year, she pushed even harder. While working and balancing life, she completed the final stretch of her education to earn her Associate’s Degree as a Surgical Technologist. Her final exam was completed on Halloween morning, and she crushed it. We were all ready to celebrate her huge accomplishment.

And what better way to celebrate Halloween and graduation than loading the entire Scooby Gang into the Mystery Machine and hitting Fremont Street?

But the real mystery that night became: how do you rescue Velma when Velma is the one who needs rescuing?

About two hours into the night, Adina (dressed as Velma) had a near syncopal episode while we were walking. She rolled her left ankle and leg, and when she tried to stand again, she fell a second time. The combination of both incidents led to a serious injury. Our Scooby Gang, made up entirely of paramedics and EMTs, quickly shifted from celebrations to taking treatment and assessment of Velma. 

In true “life imitates art” fashion, we had to call an actual ambulance for Velma.

The diagnosis? A closed, spiral fracture of the tibia and fibula.

X-rays showed significant fractures requiring emergency surgery, including the placement of a rod and four screws to stabilize her leg. The surgery was successful, but the recovery will be long, painful, and expensive.

And for someone who just finished school and was working at Per Diem to make room for her clinical requirements, this injury couldn’t have come at a worse financial moment.

Adina is now unable to work, facing increasing medical bills, and trying to manage normal living costs while recovering from a major leg surgery.

Adina has been the healthcare provider who has helped her community for many years, for her patients, and for her team. She has been there on countless 911 calls, home visits, urgent care responses, and emergency situations.

But now she’s the one who needs help.

Despite the circumstances, the irony isn’t lost on any of us: Velma spent Halloween solving the mystery of her own broken leg, and the entire Mystery crew turned into her emergency response team.
