Dear Family and Friends,
My name is Jessica Chase. I am a longtime friend and co-worker of Adam Mandel's. Most of you know us from Ultimate Jam Night at the Whisky a GoGo.
Last year, Adam was diagnosed with a very aggressive Stage 4 Colon Cancer that started in the Peritoneal Wall and spread. Adam’s fight has been quite a journey, and now he faces one of the most complicated and difficult stages of treatment— surgery.
This week Adam met with his surgical team, his first surgery is scheduled for October 15th.
The surgery will use special cameras and imaging to detail a specific surgical plan for the second surgery. That second surgery could be immediate or within days depending on the complexity.
At minimum, the operation will take five hours but could last up to 18 hours (yes, you read that right). The length depends on what needs to be removed and the delicate work of removing the Peritoneal Wall. At the end of surgery, heated chemotherapy will be poured into Adam’s abdominal cavity and then sucked out.
Because of the intensity and duration, the procedure will require a full surgical team—led by a primary surgeon with several secondary surgeons.
After surgery, Adam will go straight to ICU for monitoring of possible complications, including bleeding. Once stable, he will be transferred to a general hospital room for 5–7 days. Full recovery will take about a month, though his doctors believe his excellent physical condition will help him bounce back more quickly than most.
This surgery has been called the “Mother of All Surgeries.” You can see a photo of the scar he will have below. For Adam, doctors believe that, combined with the success of chemotherapy, it offers the best chance for a cure and for him to live a longer, healthier life.
Unfortunately, this fight comes with a massive financial burden. Even with insurance, Adam’s co-pays and out-of-pocket expenses are overwhelming—and that’s before factoring in the cost of this surgery and his recovery.
We are asking for support to help Adam focus on healing instead of financial stress. Anything you can contribute—big or small—will mean so much to Adam and all of us.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for standing with Adam during this difficult but hopeful time. We will continue to share updates as we move forward.
Please feel free to email me with any questions. :)
