Help Adam (& family) Get Home: The Cost of Justice Is High

A huge congratulations to my friend Adam for his new ministry position, providing spiritual care to children and families at a new pediatric hospital back home in California.

Let’s help Adam and his family with their big move.

When our friend Ayman was detained, Adam, Ayman’s chaplain colleague, sprung into action. In less than a week, he expertly used his social media presence to launch a campaign, spreading awareness and garnishing support. He planned and led a rally to elevate Ayman’s story into the national news media.

Shortly after that rally, Adam was fired from Cincinnati Children’s. For the bizarre offense of using social media to try to save a friend’s life.

He could have given up. A lot of people would have. Put his head down, quietly prayed for Ayman’s release while trying to find a new job. Recognized some things are just out of our hands.

But Adam knew that Ayman’s liberation demanded that we all reach together, fighting for justice. Fighting to bring Ayman home.

Adam was a leader in that movement. From planning and executing afternoon chalk parties and a justice oriented singalongs at busy intersections in the evening, to late night interviews with reporters from WCPO, the Guardian, Salon Magazine, Adam used every lever imaginable in the fight for Ayman’s life.

Adam moved his family from California to Ohio to provide ministry for patients, family, and staff at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. And he served faithfully for three years before his unjust and shameful termination. Now that Ayman is free, it’s time for Adam and his family to return home to the west coast, where he will continue his ministry of compassionate spiritual care for hospitalized children and their families—and to continue doing everything in his power to contribute to the mending of the world.

His family’s 2,000 mile move will cost about $12,000.

Adam willingly sacrificed. His job. His time. His money. I want our community to band together to show Adam that the cost of doing justice is high, but we don’t bear that cost alone.

Let’s get Adam as close to that $12,000 goal as possible. Let’s help Adam and his family make their way to their new home.

We can’t undo the pain Adam and his family endured in this fight, but we can help carry the burden with him.
