Hi, my name is Eilish Mc Shane and I am raising funds to help my 19 year old grand nephew Adam Duffy fight Ewing Sarcoma which is a rare aggressive form of cancer.
ADAM'S STORY
Until recently Adam was a young energetic Irish 19 year old , full of life who loved, (amongst other things) playing rugby (with Dundalk, Lansdowne, the Leinster squad and the Ireland camp)
- December 2022 he was experiencing severe back pain and was diagnosed with a large tumour on his spine which turned out to be Ewing Sarcoma
- During the 12 hour surgery, the surgeons removed the tumour as well as bone and muscle which has affected his ability to walk.
- He has undergone ten rounds of aggressive chemotherapy to tackle this very aggressive form of cancer.
- Once completed, the next stage in his treatment is Proton Radiotherapy which is a targeted form of radiation developed to treat the cancer but preventing organ damage.
- Proton Radiotherapy is not available in Ireland so he has to go to The Christie Cancer Treatment Centre Manchester, UK.
- Duration of treatment in the UK expected to be 6 weeks
- His medical treatment will be covered by the Health Services.
- However, fundraising is needed to cover the costs of travel, Accommodation and maintenance whilst he is there.
Expenses
- Flights and transfers
- Accommodation- Adam will be receiving Radiotherapy in short bursts on a daily outpatient basis so he needs somewhere to stay between sessions where he can recuperate and rest.
- Food
- Transport to and from the hospital
- Family member as carer/ support.
Estimated costs for 6 weeks is around €15,000.
