HELP ADAM (AKA BETTER PERSON) GET HIS LIFE BACK

As some of you may know, our dear friend Adam Byczkowski has been extremely ill for more than two years now. Adam contracted Covid-19 during the first wave in March 2020. He was debilitated by the illness, and his health slowly deteriorated over the following months to the point where he is now unable to leave home and spends his days in bed, with his eyes covered by a facemask.

Most of the time Adam is experiencing excruciating flu-like symptoms, similar to those that one has during active Covid, or the 1-2 days post-vaccine: aches and pains, extreme fatigue, light sensitivity, a total inability to control body temperature, insomnia, rashes and heart palpitations are just a few of the regular symptoms he experiences. He is unable to prepare food, wash regularly or look at a phone or computer for more than a few minutes a day. Working on or even listening to music is out of the question, as he can’t look at a computer screen. He also can’t watch movies or television or listen to podcasts.

After more than two years, we are financially depleted and desperate to get Adam the help he needs. Doctors and specialists have ruled out brain issues, thyroid and heart problems, and he’s had blood tests for various other conditions. They have diagnosed him with severe Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS) or Long Covid. Both are debilitating diseases with a wide range of symptoms, and no known cure. We’re hoping that he will be able to recover and it won’t become a lifelong condition, so we’re trying everything we can to improve his health.

Unfortunately most medical treatments for Long Covid in Germany must be paid out of pocket. The reason is that many are experimental and will take years to be approved by insurance companies, time that we can’t afford to spend waiting with Adam in this condition.

In January we were able to get Adam five H.E.L.P. apheresis treatments, blood filtering procedures to remove clots and auto-antibodies which may be the cause of Adam’s symptoms, but we ran out of money to pay for more treatments (they cost 1400 Euros each for a total of 7000 Euros). He noticed a minimal improvement, but recent studies suggest that up to 10 treatments minimum are needed for someone who has been sick for as long as Adam has.

Adam is desperate to try any procedure that might help him. He has used every ounce of spare energy that he has to research and has found some more treatments that might help. He is determined to get his life back, and will do whatever it takes to make music again. Below we’ve listed some of the treatments available in Germany that we would like to pursue if we can gather the funds. Most aim to tackle what is suspected to be the leading cause of Long Covid: problems arising in the blood, inflammation of the nervous system, and dysfunctioning immune system and issues with micro-circulation.

Beyond these treatments, giving Adam some more time to rest without the financial pressures we’ve been facing would be invaluable for his recovery. It has been extremely distressing for him to feel that he is a burden on his loved ones, and it feels crucial to his recovery for him to gain some financial stability.

We hope that our friends and family can take this opportunity to give us some support and show your love for Adam. Through all of this he has remained the same kind, caring and hilarious person you remember. He misses everyone terribly, and wishes he could have the energy to stay in touch and see friends. It's been a huge source of sadness for him to be so cut off from the people he loves.

Hopefully, one of these treatments will be a turning point for Adam, and if all else fails, he will be able to use the time this money affords him to navigate his future as a chronically ill person. Any contribution means the world to us.

Specialized Auto Antibody test from Celltrend Germany - 467 EUR

Any additional funds will go towards paying Adam’s rent and monthly food and medication costs (roughly 1000 euros per month)

Jak zapewne niektórzy z Was wiedzą, nasz drogi przyjaciel i mój chłopak Adam Byczkowski od ponad dwóch lat jest ciężko chory. Adam zaraził się wirusem Covid-19 podczas pierwszej fali w marcu 2020 roku. Choroba go osłabiła, a jego stan zdrowia pogarszał się powoli przez kolejne miesiące do tego stopnia, że obecnie nie jest w stanie wychodzić z domu i większość dnia spędza w łóżku z zasłoniętymi oczami, nie mogąc przygotować sobie jedzenia, regularnie się myć ani patrzeć na telefon czy komputer przez więcej niż kilka minut dziennie. Muzyka, filmy i podcasty nie wchodzą w grę, a przez większość czasu odczuwa dokuczliwe objawy grypopodobne, podobne do tych, które występują podczas aktywnego Covida lub w okresie rekonwalescencji po szczepionce.

Po ponad dwóch latach takiej sytuacji jesteśmy wyczerpani finansowo i zdesperowani, aby zapewnić Adamowi pomoc, której potrzebuje. Niestety, leczenie Long-Covid w Niemczech musi być opłacane z własnej kieszeni i prawdopodobnie miną lata, zanim jakiekolwiek leczenie zostanie zatwierdzone do pokrycia przez niemieckie ubezpieczenie medyczne. W styczniu udało nam się załatwić Adamowi pięć zabiegów aferezy H.E.L.P., czyli zabiegów filtrowania krwi w celu usunięcia skrzepów i autoprzeciwciał, które mogą być przyczyną objawów Adama, ale zabrakło nam pieniędzy na opłacenie kolejnych zabiegów (każdy z nich kosztował 1400 euro, czyli w sumie 7000 euro). Zauważył bardzo niewielką poprawę, ale najnowsze badania sugerują, że w przypadku osoby, która choruje tak długo jak Adam, potrzeba co najmniej 10 zabiegów.

Adam jest zdesperowany, by spróbować każdej procedury, która mogłaby mu pomóc. Wykorzystuje każdą uncję wolnej energii, jaką ma, na research i znalazł kilka innych metod leczenia, które mogą mu pomóc. Jest zdeterminowany, aby odzyskać swoje życie i zrobi wszystko, aby znów móc tworzyć muzykę. Poniżej przedstawiamy listę niektórych metod leczenia dostępnych w Niemczech oraz ich przybliżoną cenę. Jednak poza tymi zabiegami, bezcenne dla powrotu Adama do zdrowia byłoby zapewnienie mu trochę więcej czasu na odpoczynek bez presji finansowej, z którą się borykamy. Poczucie, że jest ciężarem dla swoich bliskich, jest dla niego niezwykle przygnębiające i choć stara się uzyskać pomoc społeczna, ilość biurokracji i czasu, który musiałby poświęcić na stanie w urzędach, jest dla niego w tej chwili po prostu zbyt duża.

Mamy nadzieję, że nasi przyjaciele i rodzina skorzystają z tej okazji, aby okazać nam wsparcie i miłość do Adama. Mimo koszmarnej sytuacji zdrowotnej i zyciowej Adam pozostaje tą samą miłą, troskliwą i zabawną osobą, którą pamiętacie. Miejmy nadzieję, że jedna z tych terapii będzie dla Adama punktem zwrotnym, a jeśli wszystko inne zawiedzie, będzie mógł wykorzystać czas, jaki dają mu te pieniądze, na poukładanie sobie przyszłości jako osoba przewlekle chora. Każda wpłata znaczy dla nas bardzo wiele.
