Who are we?
ACORN is a community union. Week after week we take direct action against slum landlords, estate agents, and property developers to protect our members and our communities. We resist evictions, win compensation, and force repairs to be done. We win for our members, and we’re proud of that. But it is that same success that means that landlords, estate agents, and businesses we come up against are using their superior wealth to try and bury our campaigns and our movement with legal threats.
Why do we need a legal fund?
Every week we’re flooded with legal threats from property developers and landlords with the money to weaponise the law against us for standing up to them. ACORN is an organisation of low income people - unlike our enemies we can't afford the lawyers we need to defend us.
Without legal representation we could be liable for massive costs and damages that could bankrupt our union. But it’s not just damages and legal costs; if we don’t have the resources to fight back against the rich and powerful when they try to take out injunctions to silence us and shut down our protests, then they’ll succeed.
In just a few years ACORN has changed the lives of thousands of people struggling in unsafe and insecure housing. We’ve defeated landlords, property developers, big banks, councils, and even the government - and there’s so much more to come. But unless we fight off these threats in court, ACORN’s very existence could be at risk.
Will you chip in to defend our movement?
