Help The Champ aka AC Beat ADEM
Hello, My name is Whitney McGuire. Thankfully I was chosen to be the mother of the most gentle giant I know, Alfred Officer V (AC). AC was diagnosed with an rare and uncommon autoimmune disease called Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis(ADEM). ADEM is a brief but intense attack of inflammation (swelling) in the brain and spinal cord and occasionally the optic nerves that damages the brain’s myelin (the white coating of nerve fibers). Two days after his 10th birthday our lives were changed forever. After being told the week before he just had a virus, and him getting better for a few days, I was letting him "sleep it off", or so I thought. I was so wrong. In short, on February 24th, he was admitted into the PICU at Integris. The chances of this happening are 8 in 1 million. After 10 days in ICU we were being prepared for the worst, but AC is making a miraculous recovery. He has his memory, his sense of humor, smile and most importantly, his life. Due to severe injuries to his brain, he will be needing an undetermined amount of physical therapy. This could take weeks, months, or years depending upon his progression. He will be admitted to The Children's Center located in Bethany, OK within the next week to begin the therapy. This is one of the best facilities in the nation for children. Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't cover 100% of his therapy. I have been on FMLA since February 24th and I am the sole provider for all four of my children. We do not receive any state assistance, so things will be very tight for us as we continue to take care of our household necessities and somehow manage to cover all other bills as well. Average stay there is 24 months. I am currently unaware and we are unsure of the length of time it will take for a full recovery. I am asking for your prayers first and foremost as this has been a very trying time for my family. Anything donated is beyond appreciated and again we thank you for your care and prayers. Let's Help AC beat ADEM! Thank you!
