Why: I set up a gofundme fundraiser to pay for my tuition to become a certified Horticulture Therapist . This is something that I’ve wanted to do for years. Still, it wasn’t economically viable for me because of my other commitments, which consisted of doing nonprofit work for pay, and working for free as the Director and Founder of Grace Grows on the side. It is feasible now because the University of Florida now has an option for online courses, so I can do it after work. My commitment to service in my community has always been a priority, but because I’ve never made a lot of money, it has not afforded opportunities like this that would help both me and help me do community work better.
Most people who know me know I’m pretty visible in the community because of the community work I participate in. I have spent thousands and thousands of hours doing volunteer service work. A lot of people assume I have more credentials than I do. I certainly have great experience, and, off the record, that counts for more to me. But also these credentials can help me on a personal level and allow me to work with folks who experience trauma or disabilities better, which is what they deserve. I started doing Grace Grows work in 2015 which initially was a therapeutic food garden for people who are experiencing homelessness but now it has grown to do so much more.
Background: I have a two-year degree, but even that was a challenge at the time because I was on my own, was working low-wage labor, and had pretty bad untreated PTSD due to being a victim of violent crime when I was a teen. I have come so far, and now it’s time to advocate for myself. This is the next step.
Costs: I am applying for scholarships, but my first class starts January 9th, 2023 and I don’t think I will get news before then. The first class is 636$. For the entire program, it will be 2,589$. This is a link to the cost break down . Financial aid does not cover this program. I am seeking to raise money for the whole amount, and if I do, I will turn down the scholarships if any are offered.
It's time for me to advocate for myself as well. I am asking my community to help me get there. While I feel highly privileged for all I’ve been able to do with my community, it hasn’t offered me these kinds of opportunities. I would be forever grateful for your support, whether it’s monetary or spreading the word.
Some ways that you can help are the following:
• Donate. No amount is too small.
• Share this fundraiser across all social media platforms. And do it more than once during its duration. A personal message really helps.
• Better yet, make a direct personal ask to someone you know who may donate. This one is harder to do, but it usually works the best.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me personally.
