Help Abdou Help His Family out of a Hard Situation

Hi, my name is Travis. I am an visual artist and musician, living on Vancouver Island, Canada.

I have started this Go Fund Me page to help a caring young man support his family

 

This young man's name is Abdou Sonko.

He is 27 years old and was born and resides in a small village in Gambia, West Africa.

Abdou lives lives with his three younger siblings, his father, as well as his widowed sister and her two kids.

 

As the eldest son, he has taken on the role of the main provider of food, shelter, clothes, medication and caregiving for his family. Abdou currently works as a labourer in his community, however the pay he receives is a barely enough to provide for one person, let alone his loved ones that depend on him.

 

As of  2021, Abdou had enough steady work as a taxi driver in the city to provide for his family.

However, he can no longer work that job, because he does not own his own taxi.

This past season has been tougher on Abdou and...

 

One night over this Christmas break, Abdou reached out to me, through an Instagram chat, and told me his story and his family's situation. His family had gone to bed without food on Christmas, rent was due, an eviction pending and the annual medication for his brother and father were needed.

 

I knew I had the means to help, so I transferred him some funds to help cover rent, food and medical costs, via WorldRemit.com. Abdou responded the next day with photos of the food, and medications that the funds had purchased, as well as 'thank you videos' from his family members.

Since then, Abdou and I have had daily talks about how to make this hard situation easier on him.

Recently, a neighbour of Abdou's, whom is sympathetic to his family's situation, offered Abdou a chance to purchase a piece of property located centrally in their village.  On this land, Abdou plans to build a compound to shelter all of his family together, as well as, use the land for agriculture and live-stock. Abdou feels the land is a great investment for his family and their future, and will provide them an opportunity to have their own independence.

The seller of the land gave Abdou one month to put a down payment on the land, and agreed to hold the land in Abdou's name un till the property is fully paid for. Once paid for completely, Abdou will have full ownership of land, a first for anyone in his family, and the permission to start building.

Since then, I have provided the down payment for the land, and the property has been secured, and an agreement with the land owner has been made. Now comes the task of fundraising the remainder of the amount, as well, as providing support for the monthly needs of his family i.e. food, shelter, medications.

as well as a boost of morale, hope, and confidence to Abdou and his family!

Abdou cares deeply for his family, and has hopes and dreams that he can provide a healthy upbringing for his younger siblings, and provide them with an opportunity to attend school and become the next doctors or teachers of the future.
