We are the Newsroom Union of ABC6 under NABET-CWA, one of the three local broadcast news leaders of southern New England. Recently, the purchase of our station by Sinclair Media has led to layoffs and uncertainty in an already unstable time for news, the economy, and the job market as a whole. Many of our members are financially struggling after 1.5 years of negotiating our first contract, only to be sold off and told to start all over again with a different, more powerful company. We need help now more than ever from our news community members.
This money will go towards helping laid-off and current employees make rent, buy groceries for their families, and pay prescription medical costs in the event of emergencies that have inevitably landed in our laps. We currently have laid-off employees desperate to remove the shackles of breaking leases in order to move and find work, and pay bills for houses they've called home for decades.
Nobody wants to lose their jobs; in difficult times like these and with the instability of merging companies, we fear it will be inevitable. We understand that times are tough right now, and money is not easily given away. We thank any and everyone that donates even the smallest amount, and promise that no dollar will go to waste.
In Solidarity,
The WLNE-ABC6 Newsroom Union
