We are all very excited that after 58 days, Abby is finally home today! But with the reality of being in a motorized wheelchair, coming home is very expensive. Abby needed a van that can accommodate her chair just to get her home and while they did get the van, paying for the customized van is a different issue. They’ve had to buy a lift to assist with getting in and out of the chair. They had to build a ramp just to get her in the door and need to remodel a bathroom, interior doorways, and make other modifications to their house. This is all in addition to Mary having to give up her summer school job and Adam taking leave after the accident. A huge financial burden they never could have anticipated. They very much appreciate all the generous donations that they received to get them through the hospital stay, and they are reluctant to ask for anything more. However, I know how much this family is loved and how far and wide their village extends and I think if everyone could help a little we could ease some of this financial burden and help with Abby’s quality of life at home.

If you’re new to this story: On 6/4, Abby, at almost 16 years old, dove off the block at swim practice as she had done a hundred times over the years, and suffered a serious spinal cord injury. She spent all summer inpatient, and is now home to continue outpatient therapy, learning to navigate her new life on wheels. She is an amazing girl—a trumpet player in the band, swimmer, golfer, Girl Scout, dancer, honor student—and she is determined to continue to do all of these things. We know with her attitude and determination she will! Your support will go directly toward giving Abby the freedom and comfort she deserves as she navigates this new chapter.
