Help Abby defeat ARFID
Donation protected
This Thanksgiving, like many of you, I spent a beautiful day cooking and eating with my family. However, my amazing friend Elise spent another day in the hospital with her youngest of three kids.
Abby was admitted into the hospital for a number of complication that stem from an eating disorder known as ARFID, Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder.
When Abby was first diagnosed, she needed to be taken out of school and brought to multiple doctors and therapists who thought a few weeks was all that was needed. Elise quit her teaching job and did everything that the professionals recommended.
Abby got worse and Elise realized that the advice she was getting wasn’t working. Abby was losing more weight, her anxiety was getting worse and ELISE made the decision to take her to an ER of a hospital with a juvenile eating disorder program.
Abby was admitted, given an IV for hydration, a feeding tube and a team of doctors who are talking about NOT JUST treating, but curing her. Abby needs to learn how to drink and eat again without anxiety. Her many doctors believe that medication will not make a difference until she gains weight, their goal is 21 pounds. She has refeeding syndrome, so the calories she takes in are currently through a tube.
Elise didn’t want to ask, or admit she needed financial help, but this has already been a long road and it has just started.
After years of saving, Elise finally fulfilled her dream, and bought a house for her and her three children. She started teaching again, covering a maternity leave, to help make ends meet, in addition to her amazing photography business. The world needs Abby to get better and Abby needs her mom’s full attention to make that happen. One of her classmates just wrote these kind words in a letter, “You are amazing beyond what words can say. You are the perfect example of an amazing person. I don’t think anybody deserves to be your friend because you will be too good for them you’ve been very strong these past weeks and I hope you feel better.”
I’m setting up this GoFund me for Elise; for the out of pocket expenses that have already occurred, the hospital care that insurance will not completely cover, the months ahead of treatments once Abby is discharged, the teaching job that had to be left, the photography clients that had to be turned down, the cost of living in NYC while staying in your daughter’s hospital room, and the peace of mind that she won’t have to send Abby back to school or turn any type of treatment down because she needs to make money to avoid missing a mortgage payment.
I set the Goal at $21,000, a thousand for every pound. Anything extra will go to an eating disorder research organization of Abbys choosing.
