After being admitted to the ER a month ago and receiving blood transfusions for what was believed to be anemia, our friend Abby underwent brief surgery. Upon further examination, it was determined that she had endometrial high grade serous carcinoma (the more aggressive of two types of uterine cancer) atypical for the age of 34. She has had to move quickly over the last two weeks since receiving this news to start treatment and multiple surgeries including fertility treatment, a full hysterectomy, hormone therapy, and follow up treatment.

To those who don’t know Abby well, not only is she a talented artist, baker, and pianist, but she has also volunteered abroad working with foster children and abandoned elderly in Costa Rica and in an orphanage in Chile. She has her Masters in Social Work and plans on attending a highly selective doctorate program for Clinical Psychology in the fall. She lives with her two fur babies and is the newly promoted Academic Director at a residential treatment facility for mental health and substance abuse for adolescents and young adults. She enjoys working additional jobs in the service industry but will not be able to continue working while undergoing treatment.
