A Journey Toward Education and Empowerment: Supporting My Master’s in Digital Humanities at the University of Alberta

My name is Aamina Rafique, and I am seeking your support to pursue a Master’s in Digital Humanities at the University of Alberta, a globally ranked institution (4th in Canada, 96th QS World Rankings). This program represents the culmination of my lifelong commitment to education and my aspirations to contribute to the fields of technology and humanities through interdisciplinary research.

My Story

Breaking free from conventional norms, at 16, I was awarded the prestigious fully funded Youth Exchange and Study (YES) Scholarship, which allowed me to represent Pakistan as a cultural ambassador in the United States. This transformative experience exposed me to diverse perspectives and fueled my passion for learning. Upon returning to Pakistan, I secured a 100% scholarship for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) at Beaconhouse School System, further deepening my commitment to education. As the first woman in my family to pursue undergraduate education, I earned a 95% merit scholarship to study Social Development and Policy at Habib University, Pakistan’s first liberal arts institution. The interdisciplinary education strengthened my interest in using innovative, data-driven methods to address global challenges.

Why Digital Humanities?

Digital Humanities combines humanities with computational research methods to address complex societal challenges through data and technology. The Master’s program at the University of Alberta is uniquely designed to equip students with advanced skills in data-intensive research, computational analysis, and collaborative problem-solving. It offers a platform to merge my academic background in social sciences with cutting-edge technological tools, enabling me to contribute meaningfully to research and development in this area.

Financial Challenges

While I was honored to receive admission to this prestigious program, the financial requirements pose a significant challenge. As someone who has relied on merit-based scholarships to fund my education, I was unable to secure the necessary resources for the Fall 2024 intake. As a result, I had to defer my admission to Fall 2025.

To date, I have managed to secure 45% of the required funding through personal savings and external support. However, I still need approximately $15,764.18 (USD) to cover the remaining tuition and living expenses.
