A Sudden Fight for Life — and a Journey We Never Expected

In just a matter of hours, our family’s world shifted. My niece, a young mother to a 6-year-old little boy, experienced rapid acute liver failure

The decline happened so fast that we were told she had only a few days to live. Hearing those words felt unreal — like time stopped.

The Reality of This Medical Crisis:

Right now, she is in critical condition and fighting for her life, it will be a rollercoaster for weeks.

This level of medical care requires intubation, multiple IV lines, ports, and constant monitoring. It’s clinical, overwhelming, and incredibly difficult to witness. Standing beside someone you love as machines take over basic functions creates a helplessness that is hard to describe.

I never imagined in my lifetime that I would be watching my sister and brother in law go through this — watching my sister stand beside her daughter while unable to help or comfort her in the way a mother instinctively wants to. It is heartbreaking to see her and her husbands strength and her pain at the same time. All I can do is take care of them while trusting the doctors, nurses, and specialists to take care of my niece.

Fighting for a Chance

We never imagined we would have to advocate for something as serious as a transplant — yet we found ourselves pleading her case, hoping she would be considered for an liver transplant, the only option that could save her life. In reality 18,000 people are on the transplant list for a liver.

It’s something no family ever expects to face: hoping for a miracle while knowing that miracle comes from another family’s loss. The weight of that reality is heavy.

If a transplant is successful the journey continues with months of follow-up care, daily hospital visits, rehabilitation, long-term medications, and support for her child while life restructures around recovery.

No one plans for something like this — emotionally, mentally, or financially. The sudden medical crisis, time away from work, time from her son (we thank the little guys father who has been amazing taking care of the little man) ongoing travel, and long-term care create a level of strain that is impossible to prepare for.
