Recently as a group of residents and fellows from University of Connecticut we went on a trip to work in a hospital in Uganda for a month. While there we met a 14 year old girl named Phiona who has severe mitral stenosis (a type of valvular heart disease). Medications can help to control her symptoms but ultimately the treatment that she needs is heart surgery. Unfortunately, for her this means traveling almost 10 hours for a surgery that she cannot afford. She has no mother and her father is minimally involved. In addition, she has several young siblings at home for whom she is the main caretaker. Her surgery will cost about $6000 which we are hoping to help her out with. Without this surgery she will not be able to live a long and healthy life.
If you choose to donate, your money will end up going through Doctors for Global Health, Inc. to be redirected specifically for Phiona's surgery. Anything, no matter how big or small, that you can contribute is greatly appreciated and will help save this young girl's life!
