Hello, we’re in such a dark place, and we have had no choice but to share our deeply personal and sensitive story nationwide. We’re James and Lucy, a military veteran (former paratrooper) and his wife.
About James:
James served in the Parachute Regiment, and as a result of his service, developed complex PTSD, which makes him unfit to work.
About Our Family:
I am his registered, full-time carer, and together we are raising our two teenage sons, one of whom is autistic with a learning disability.
What Happened:
In January 2026, our Universal Credit claim was unexpectedly stopped because James’ Armed Forces Compensation is now treated as capital. This has resulted in a loss of around £1,700 per month, leaving us struggling to cover our monthly rent of £1,650, utilities, food, and other essential expenses for our family.
Why We Need Help:
Unfortunately, charities are unable to provide financial support because of the compensation, which leaves us with no other options to cover basic living costs.
This isn’t about luxury — it’s about survival and fairness. Veterans and their families should not be penalised for receiving compensation or forced to use funds intended to provide long-term financial reassurance and support for service-related injury or illness, especially when caring responsibilities and illness make it impossible to work.
What We’re Doing:
We are actively campaigning to change this legislation, and you can support the petition here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/757758
But until the law changes, we urgently need help just to get through each month.
How Donations Will Be Used:
Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly to covering our family’s essential living costs, primarily rent, bills, and basic necessities. We will post updates on any progress with our campaign for UC reform.
Your Support Matters:
Your support will not only help our family survive this unprecedented gap, but also send a message that veterans and families with ongoing care needs should not be penalised for circumstances beyond their control.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for any help you can give.
— James & Lucy
